Jame Watt was a Scottish engineer born in Glasgow on January 19, 1736. After a period of training, he unsuccessfully tried to set up as an instrument maker, and ended up as a technician at Glasgow University. It was there that he had a chance to examine and repair a primitive steam engine designed by Newcomen. |
By making a proper scientific study of the properties of steam, Watt worked out the best conditions for its efficient use, and in 1769, he patented what was a radically new improved steam engine. More patents followed, as Watt improved his engine, which by then was being produced industrially and had all but completely replaced the Newcomen engine. The Industrial Revolution was made possible by Watt's engine.
Watt died at Heathfield, near Birmingham, on August 19, 1819.
